Book Club Discussion Q's

Character

  • How far back do your #FarmRoots go? (Who? What generation? Who was the last generation of #Farmers in your heritage?)
  • What were the first names of the people of your roots? (Do they give insight to a generational time period?)
  • What are three character traits you would use to describe a ‘Farmer?’

Life Skills

  • Many of us still had a grandma — who was a #FarmKid — what life skills do you think she learned growing up on a Farm?
  • Do you see Farmers as ‘the original, American entrepreneur?

Agriculture as a Career choice

  • Do you think parents should purposely ‘talk about agriculture as a career choice’ to their kids?
  • Did you know that your kids can become members of 4-H and FFA? (Through school or local county extension office.)
  • What do you think is the reason ‘farmhouse style’ became such a big design element in our homes?
  • What have you done with your kids?

  1. Tour a Farm
  2. Visit a Farm ‘discovery center’
  3. Gotten a pumpkin from the field of a pumpkin patch
  4. Eaten at a Breakfast on the Farm
  5. Bought food from a Farmer’s Market
  6. Took a ride 5 miles or more from the edge of your city to show them where #RuralAmerica is…

  • What do you think is the value of a career — that requires a way of life — that is centered around ‘work?’

[The title tells the reader to expect something unique with this book. The title you would expect is When I Talked to a Farmer. Pete brings back the art of listening in an age when we need it the most.]

[This book is not a romantic portrait of farmers. Instead, it is a realistic portrayal of people who work hard, are problem solvers, entrepreneurs and get up every day grounded in hope and resilience.]

"When I Listened to a Farmer was constructed in a such a unique way. The photographs alone tell a story, filled with emotion. Looking at the faces of the men and women who appear in the book show how much they care about their work, their lifestyle, and what they have committed to. The photographer captured the beautiful and serene images of rural life. Capturing the raw energy that is most found in the farming community itself.

The writing itself I found to be unique in its own way. While I often found the writing tied to the photo with it some of them had there own purpose. I found that the writing conveyed its own sense of raw power. Often tugging at my heart strings wanting me to know more, the writing is stringed together in such a way that it leaves you wanting more."

"It encompasses the truth behind our passion...it takes me back to when I was a kid and wanted to 'explore' our barns...finding old beaten up treasures...finding treasures in things that are broken...I gravitated to your photos."

"Sitting down to read Pete's book is a relaxing reminder of the simple things in life.  We tend to quickly forget all that we have...he reminds us to appreciate:  our families, our friends and our mentors."
